Ultrasonography
It is a diagnostic method that visualise the internal organs through the abdominal wall. It uses the transmission and reflection of ultrasound waves.
Ultrasonography can be used to view all organs of the body (brain, eye, lung, breast, hip, testicle, thyroid, soft tissue masses, and prostate).
A Doppler ultrasound is a test that uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the amount of blood flow through arteries and veins. This is done by making use of frequency variation as the sound waves hit and reflect on the blood cells in the blood vessels.
Besides, the color doppler examination draws the flow direction and velocity of blood in the vessels with red-blue colors on the screen.
A regular ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images, but can't show blood flow.
A Doppler ultrasound may help diagnose many conditions, including:
• Blood clots
• Venous insufficiency
• Heart valve defects and congenital heart disease
• Arterial occlusion
• Aneurysms
Ultrasonography has a very important role in the diagnosis of muscle, skeletal, and soft tissue diseases. In addition to diagnosis, ultrasonography plays an important role in the treatment.
Volumetric increase in muscle tissue, edema, and fluid accumulation can be seen by ultrasonography. One of the most important advantages of ultrasonography compared to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is that it can perform dynamic imaging. For example, different images are obtained in different positions while performing a shoulder examination with USG. Thus, muscle pathologies can be understood more clearly.
